Ingredients

Scale Recipe
4 servings
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce (gluten-free)
  • 1 head butter lettuce
  • 1 large tomato (sliced)
  • 1 medium avocado (sliced)
  • 1/2 medium red onion (sliced)

Instructions

  1. 1

MIX THE BURGER MIXTURE: In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, GF Worcestershire sauce, 3/4 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined - don't overwork the meat or the burgers will be dense and tough. The egg helps bind the lean turkey meat.

  2. 2

FORM THE PATTIES: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each into a patty about 3/4-inch thick and slightly wider than your serving setup (they'll shrink when cooking). Press a shallow dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb - this prevents the burger from puffing up in the middle.

  3. 3

COOK THE BURGERS: Heat a grill or large skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add 1 tbsp oil. Cook burgers 5-6 minutes per side until well-browned and cooked through - turkey must reach 165°F (74°C) internal temperature. Don't press down on the burgers while cooking or you'll squeeze out the juices.

  4. 4

REST THE BURGERS: Transfer to a plate and let rest 2-3 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute for a moister burger.

  5. 5

PREPARE THE WRAPS: Separate the butter lettuce leaves, choosing the largest, most cup-shaped ones. Rinse and pat dry. You'll need 2 leaves per burger for a secure wrap.

  6. 6

ASSEMBLE: Place each burger in a lettuce cup (or between two leaves for a 'bun' effect). Top with sliced tomato, avocado slices, and thin rings of red onion. Add your favorite condiments - mayo, mustard, or GF ketchup all work great. Serve immediately.
